AIAA invites you to spend the evening with us as we have the honor to host - Daniel Collins as he speaks about United Launch Alliance (ULA). ULA is a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. It produces the Atlas V and Delta II & IV launch vehicles. Lockheed Martin and Boeing announced their intent to form the joint venture in May of 2005. ULA officially began operations on December 1, 2006. The joint venture merges the production of both their government space launch services into one central plant in Decatur, Alabama and all engineering into another central plant in Littleton, CO. ULA launched its first rocket, a Delta II 7920-10 with a classified NRO spacecraft, from Vandenberg AFB, 14 Dec. 2006.
Daniel Collins is the chief operating officer for United Launch Alliance (ULA). Collins is responsible for the operation of the Atlas and Delta expendable launch vehicle programs, including design, engineering, integration, production, quality assurance and program management. Before joining ULA, Collins served as vice president of the Launch Systems Division for The Boeing Company, where he oversaw the Delta launch vehicle, Titan payload fairing and Sea Launch payload accommodations programs. He was also responsible for Boeing Launch Services, the contract and marketing organization for the Delta and Sea Launch vehicles. Prior to this assignment, Collins was vice president and program manager of the Boeing Delta program, overseeing the Delta II and Delta IV launch vehicle families. He also served as vice president and program manager of the Boeing Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) effort where he was responsible for the development and production of the Delta IV for the U.S. Air Force EELV program, after serving as the program manager for the Delta III program. Collins began his career at McDonnell Douglas in 1990 as a structural analysis engineer on the Space Station Freedom program. He held several positions of increasing responsibility and served on the integrated product team for the International Space Station™s pressurized elements.
